As a founding director of the social enterprise Grow Social Capital I want to help communities recognise and invest in the resource they have in abundance , despite these strident times: their Social Capital.
As a keen disciple of Robert Putnam, the value of recognising and nurturing the bonds and relationship that make up the different forms of social capital has great resonance with community development practice. But where community development concerns itself with power imbalances, structural inequality, and social injustice, a concern with social capital can be less overtly political and more in tune with what community and social empowerment can be for; not just what we can be against.
Grow Social Capital offers capacity building to organisations across all sectors. Keep an eye out every Friday morning on Twitter for our Random Acts of #SocialCapital and Social Capital Week which takes place annually during the last week of February.
